The Best Power Yoga Flow Ever!

Hi lovelies! I'm so excited to finally bring you my favorite power yoga flow, The Rocket. It's what made me fall in love with yoga and become a teacher.

Rocket yoga is thought to be the original power yoga and is like Ashtanga on steroids. It gets you moving, sweating, breathing and FLOWING like a traditional yogi (or yogini), but let's you break a few rules along the way. This class is designed for those of you who want to get stretchier, fitter, calmer, longer, hotter, and happier.

Who created Rocket Yoga?

Rocket Yoga was created by a guy named Larry Schultz. He had studied under Pattabhi Jois learning classical Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga; however, like many of us, Larry became frustrated with not being allowed to move onto the Second Series and practice other poses besides the Primary Series as he could not master all the asanas.

So when he arrived back home in San Francisco he decided to combine first, second, and third series of Ashtanga Yoga, but in a different order. He started to string the poses together around the joints of the body, making it easier to get into some of the more difficult poses.

How did The Rocket get it's name?

He later went on tour with The Grateful Dead, teaching them yoga and this sequence. One day after class, Bob Wier said to Larry, "what is the name of this sequence.. it’s great!" Larry said he did not have a name for it, he just loved to teach it. Wier then said he should call it “The Rocket!  Because it gets you there faster!!”  And it stuck instantly. After the tour, he opened up a studio in San Francisco called 'It's Yoga' where he made this practice more widely available.

What is Rocket Yoga?

The Rocket is playful and dynamic, and offers modifications for many of the traditional poses. It encourages a smooth unbroken rhythm of breath and movement, and as it may appear to be a very physical practice it is actually leading us on a path of self-realization. As Larry says, "It's like an invisible force of energy, to help us reach our dreams and our goals."

It also adds in more strengthening core moves which aid in an inversion practice, and also includes lots of hip openers, backbends and twists to create a well-rounded practice and calm mind.

As I mentioned, it's my favorite practice, always challenging and lots of fun. It leaves me feeling stronger, lighter, more flexible and buzzing. So it's great to do in the morning or afternoon. If you do happen to do it in the evening, make sure to do an extra long closing to calm your body and mind so you can sleep.

So, what are you waiting for?! Go put on your workout clothes and let's get this day started!

Let me know what you think of this flow in the comments below! I'll be posting a new video every Tuesday, so be sure to subscribe to my channel and like my video!

Hope you have a great day! xx

"Often people walk into 'It’s Yoga' with worry, stress and tiredness written all over their faces but when they leave, they show the effects of Ashtanga Yoga: they feel better and look better, lighter, freer, more relaxed and energized. This is why to me, teaching Ashtanga Yoga is a kind of self-realization; every time I lead class I, as a teacher, grow and express the insights of my own yoga. I see people take in the practice from various angles and develop, change and transcend their limitations, realize their possibilities."
