New Mandala Earth Flow

Mandala yoga is a great way to aid meditation. The sequence usually has a single focus that ties to one of the elements (Earth, Air, Water, or Fire) and each element ties to a chakra and a target area in the body.

A mandala is a circular diagram with a spiritual and ritual significance. In Sanskrit it means “essence”, “having” or “containing”. It can also be translated as “circle-circumference” or “completion”. In yoga, Mandalas are used to help focus attention and target a specific area in the body.

And when we practice a Mandala Vinyasa Flow sequence we travel 360 degrees around the mat creating a circle. The different elements tie to specific areas in the body, and can be accessed through certain yoga asanas (or poses).

  • Earth- Muladhara Chakra, grounding focusing on hamstrings
  • Air- Anahata Chakra, opening focusing on opening up the chest
  • Water- Svadhishthana Chakra, emotions/fluidity focusing on the hips and groin
  • Fire- Manipura Chakra Will power/ Motivation focusing on twisting

In today's practice will focus on the element of Earth, grounding and stretching our hamstrings and legs.

This practice it's great to loosen up the low back and legs, build strength and lose weight. It's also a great practice to do if you're feeling worried or stressed as it taps into our root chakra,  Muladhara.

This chakra is represented by the color Red, and the element of Earth. It is what makes us feel grounded, it impacts our vitality, passion and survival instincts. It's also indicative of our need for logic and order, physical strength, and sexuality as well as the fight or flight response when faced with danger.

So why is it important. As humans our emotions and feelings are always changing. Life happens, and we must be prepared to face it. By having a regular yoga practice, and taking time to work through your chakras we can bring ourselves back into balance.

You've probably felt it before.... you walk into a yoga class, stressed, worried, and overwhelmed and by the time you leave you feel relaxed, refreshed and ready to conquer the day. That's what yoga can do. Help us find peace and grace in stressful situations.

More to come on chakras and how to tell if you're balanced, excessive, or deficient soon. In the meantime there is a great book you can read Eastern Body Western Mind that will give you everything you'd ever want to know and more about the chakra system. It's a big book, but a great read.

So enough of me babbling on... grab your mat, and get ready to awaken and heat up your body with this grounding practice!
